Day 15 - Kuala Lumpur (7th October ‘24)

Day 15, the penultimate full day of our holiday. It was the day to jump on the Hop on Hop Off Bus tour(s) of KL. We don't often do the Hop Ons, but in KL it is a good way to get around as the public transport is good, but doesn't easily cover all bases.

There were two lines. One that covered the downtown area and the other covered bits outside of the downtown area. Our plan was to do Downtown before lunch, have a break and then do the other line in the afternoon. Rather than spelling out all of the things we saw, I will do a photo dump with captions below.

When we finished the downtown track we jumped off the bus and headed to the Damascus restaurant to give it a try. This was the place that had crowds of people queuing out the front and down the street on our first night. As it was after the lunch rush we didn't have to wait in a queue. We were given a ticket with our table number and told to go to the first floor in the lift where someone would meet us to show us to our table. We hadn't realised the restaurant was enormous and spread across multiple floors. The first thing that struck us when we left the lift was how clean the place was - without the middle eastern decor you'd think you were in a hospital. I had a chicken tawook and Kirstie had a shawarma wrap and it was all absolutely stunning - I understand why it was so popular.

After my lunch I decided to be a pig and have a banana split - it was enormous but delicious.

We finished up and then headed for round 2 of the bus tour this time taking us out of the downtown area. We passed by quite a few places we had our eyes on and rather than hopping off, we made a shortlist of places we would visit tomorrow when we had more time.

One of our stops was by the Botanic gardens, where the bus driver pulled over and attracted a bunch of Macaques by feeding them some bits. We were on the top deck and thought it would only be a matter of time until they got on the deck with us - but they didn't (fortunately!).

The bus took us through a bunch of different districts and passed a few landmarks (see below). By the time we finished it was just about the sweet spot to get up high and see KL from a height in the day and the night. We headed to the KL Tower and parked ourselves there for a good hour or so taking in the scene (and setting up a time lapse of the city changing from day to night - focused on the famous Petronas Towers!). There was lightening in the distance and the clouds made the scene a bit murky - but I think it only added to the drama. We did a lap of the lower observation deck and then headed to the Petronas Tower plaza to see the buildings up and close and take in the fountain show (another one!!).

When we arrived there were loads of people taking selfies and having their own photo shoots done in front of the towers. We took a few snaps and headed through the tower mall out the back into the KLCC park where the fountain show would soon start. We did a lap of the lake and parked ourselves with a great view of the towers and the fountains. The show wasn't quite as impressive as the one in Singapore, but it was still worth seeing.

We popped into a supermarket in the lower ground floor of the mall (who doesn't love a visit to a local supermarket when you are away?). We grabbed a few bits and then headed back to the hotel.

It was a busy day and a bit of a blur, but it was great to dart around the city and see quite how much there is here (even if we did get a little bit sunburnt while doing it!).

Two idiots on a bus.

Two towers. (Petronas Towers)

Torana Gate on the way to Little India, it was a gift from the Indian government to Malaysia as a gesture of friendship.

The old KL train station. It’s been replaced with an enormous one with shopping mall, underground network and other modern amenities.

Sultan Abdul Samad Building on Merdeka square. It used to be home to the British government, now it is home to some Malaysian government departments.

An alley in Chinatown

My delicious lunch. Looks unassuming. Tasted stunning.

The city transforming from Day into Night.

Our hotel from KL tower, which overlooks a convent with the red roofs.
